Paediatrician – Doctors Without Borders – Greece

Paediatrician

Paediatricians may have to respond to a measles epidemic, manage hospital care for severely ill neonates, address the needs of malnourished children, or work with displaced families and refugees. They plan, organise and evaluate paediatric activities in close collaboration with the country’s healthcare staff working at MSF intervention sites. These facilities can include primary health care centres, clinics or hospitals. They also manage, train and supervise the paediatric team as well as the paramedical team in collaboration with the department’s nurse supervisor and/or head of nursing care.

Tasks & Duties

  • Participate the paediatric department’s development in terms of Management (carry out the department’s activities, align the department’s organisation to activities, organise and participate in medical meetings etc.) as well  as in terms of Human Resources (participate in the choice and validation of departmental team members, ensure that these members are informed of decisions taken and projects underway etc.)
  • Ensure the delivery of healthcare (carry out daily departmental rounds, guarantees the application of good medical practices as recommended in MSF guidelines and healthcare protocols, manage emergencies and ensures that care is provided to all hospitalised patients while on call/stand-by etc.)
  • Provide ongoing training (ensure the participation of doctors in ongoing paediatric training etc.)
  • Monitor activity and define objectives (participate in epidemiological data collection and analysis and draws up a monthly report of activities carried out, notify the medical advisor of any medical errors or any incidents/accidents occurring during a patient’s care etc.)

Essential requirements

  • Medical doctor degree
  • Residency in paediatrics
  • At least 2 years clinical experience in hospital paediatrics. The clinical experience must be recent acquired during the last 5 years
  • English fluency
  • Advanced computer literacy

Desirable requirements

  • Neonatology and/or intensive care, management of children requiring emergency care or cardio-respiratory intensive care: APLS (Acute Paediatric Life Support) and/or HBB (Helping Babies Breathe), ETAT (Emergency Triage, Assessment and Treatment)
  • Professional experience supervising, managing or training staff
  • Knowledge of other languages, in particular French and/or Arabic
  • Previous international experience with INGOs, UN agencies, other humanitarian organisations, charities, etc.
  • Experience working in developing countries
