Epidemiologist – Doctors Without Borders – Greece

Epidemiologist

Epidemiologists may support one or many projects, and work on a variety of issues, from mortality surveys to mapping the spread of diseases. Among other tasks, they are conducting surveys in the community, creating reports to be used for project planning. They are also helping plan appropriate response to outbreaks of disease. In addition, they are in charge in building the capacity of the medical teams to analyse and interpret the results to support evidence based decision- making.

Tasks & Duties

  • Lead implementation of the epidemiological protocols and methodology, and ensure that all staff comply with MSF protocol
  • Supervise the epidemiological research activity, and ensure that community groups, the authorities and those participating in the data collection are informed and aligned with the objectives of the research
  • Report on the progress of data collection and on-going research matters
  • Advise the MSF medical team on epidemiological matters that arise during their research activities and, if necessary, design and implement epidemiological tools and data collection
  • Define, schedule and organise, in collaboration with other medical team members, the annual epidemiological activity plan, including its budget, with a view to improving early detection of risk factors and, subsequently, treatment approaches
  • Manage, train and supervise the epidemiology team through activities such as recruitment, defining job descriptions, capacity-building, briefing/debriefing and evaluation of staff
  • Participate in operational monthly reports and organising and/or assisting medical staff with the preparation of epidemiological reports

Essential requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Masters’ Degree in Epidemiology, or Masters’ in Public Health with extensive epidemiology training
  • Proven practical skills in design / implementation / evaluation of quantitative and qualitative epidemiological research methods
  • Ability to design and implement surveillance and other data collection systems for disease and outbreak monitoring, including mortality and nutritional surveys, and to train others in appropriate data collection and analysis
  • Proven practical skills with software for epidemiological database and statistical analysis (Microsoft Excel and at least one statistical program)
  • Fluency in English

Desirable requirements

  • Medical/biomedical background
  • Familiarity with tropical diseases / infectious diseases
  • Professional experience supervising, managing or training staff
  • Knowledge of other languages, in particular French and/or Arabic
  • Previous international experience with INGOs, UN agencies, other humanitarian organisations, charities, etc.
  • Experience working in developing countries
